The Convention of 5 October 1961 Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation② for Foreign Public Documents③ (the "Apostille Convention①"), drafted by the Hague Conference on Private International Law (HCCH), replaces the costly multi-step chain of consular legalisation with a single certificate (an "Apostille", per Art. 3–4) issued by a designated Competent Authority in the state of origin. The Convention entered into force globally on 24 January 1965. The Republic of Korea acceded on 25 October 2006, and the Convention entered into force for Korea on 14 July 2007 (HCCH status table #12). As of 31 December 2025 there were 129 Contracting Parties.
