대한민국은 1997년 7월 28일 람사르협약 발효(세계 101번째 가입국)에 이어, 1999년 2월 8일 「습지보전②법」(법률 제5866호)을 제정하였습니다. 동법 제1조(목적)는 습지①와 그 생물다양성의 보전을 도모하고 습지①에 관한 국제협약③의 취지를 반영함으로써 국제협력의 증진에 이바지함을 명시하여 람사르협약 이행을 명문화하였습니다. 동법은 환경부장관 또는 해양수산부장관이 습지①보호지역·습지①주변관리지역·습지①개선지역을 지정할 수 있도록 하며(내륙습지①는 환경부, 연안습지①는 해양수산부 소관으로 이원화), 습지보전②기초조사 및 습지보전②기본계획 수립의 근거를 둡니다. 현행법은 2021년 1월 5일 일부개정(법률 제17844호, 2021년 7월 6일 시행)되었습니다.
