The Convention① on Wetlands (Ramsar, 1971) is the intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for the conservation and wise use of wetlands② and their resources. The Convention's mission is the conservation and wise use of all wetlands through local and national actions and international cooperation, as a contribution towards achieving sustainable development throughout the world. As of 2024, there are over 2,400 Ramsar Sites③ worldwide covering more than 2.5 million square kilometers.
대한민국은 1997년 Ramsar 협약에 가입하였으며, 「습지보전법①」을 제정하여 람사르협약의 국내 이행 체계를 마련하였다. 한국은 2024년 기준 24개의 람사르 습지를 등록③하였으며(창녕 우포늪, 순천만 갯벌 등), 2008년 경남 창원에서 제10차 람사르협약 당사국총회(COP10④)를 개최하였다. 2021년 「습지보전법」 개정을 통해 습지보호지역 지정·관리② 체계를 강화하고, 2023년에는 갯벌의 유네스코 세계자연유산 등재와 연계한 람사르 습지 보전 정책을 추진하고 있다.
