EU REACH① (Regulation EC No. 1907/2006), in force since June 2007, requires manufacturers and importers to register chemical substances③ above 1 tonne/year with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), and subjects substances of very high concern to evaluation, authorization, and restriction to protect human health and the environment. The UN Globally Harmonized System (GHS) provides the parallel international standard for classification and hazard labeling of chemical substances and mixtures, adopted worldwide through national legislation.
